As most pundits pointed out yesterday, President Obama's speech tonight on Afghanistan was for political purposes. War is an unfortunate circumstance and you certainly don't end it early to drum up support from your radical liberal base, as Obama did tonight [video below]. The President announced that 10,000 troops will be brought home from Afghanistan by the end of the year, with a total of 33,000 troops by the summer of 2012 - just in time for the presidential election. This would eliminate his surge of over 30,000 troops from just 18-months, a number lower than the 40,000 troops requested by the generals running the war. You don't play politics when it comes to war, and that's exactly what Obama did tonight.
American and international forces are fighting Islamic extremists in Afghanistan, who will not give up until Islam is the sole religion of the world. However, President Obama is more concerned with getting support from his anti-war, miscreant liberal extremists for his 2012 re-election campaign. Here's a tip, Mr. President: when it's game time, your fringe ideology supporters are still going to vote for you. This is yet another clear indication that the White House and top Democrats do not understand the enemy we're fighting in Afghanistan.
Obama gave a political speech tonight, fully doused with plenty of the now-standard narcissistic I and my. Nobody likes war, but you fight a war to win the war, not a re-election campaign. The Taliban has been waiting for this moment, and if there's one thing the terrorist organization has, it's patience. Everybody wants the troops home, but not for political reasons.
President Obama has given new meaning to the label Commander in Chief.
